Local Green Salon collects aluminum waste from salons and recycles it with local scrapyards. Salons can cover all of the operating expenses of the program and more through a small "Eco Fee" from customers. Do the right thing for the environment with a program that pays for itself!
Any salon doing color services generates hundreds or thousands of pounds of used aluminum foils per year. Nearly all salons send this material to landfill, which is a shame because aluminum is one of the most efficient materials to recycle compared to making it new from raw materials.
While used foils contain color residue, it tends to turn to powder in storage and vaporizes during the recycling process.
Color tubes are also made of aluminum and can be efficiently melted down to produce new products. Because excess color residue can adversely affect their marketability, Local Green Salon has identified tools and techniques to extract every last gram of color prior to recycling.
This also benefits your salon, since extracting 10-20% more color out of the tubes is equivalent to increasing your color budget by the same amount.
After sign-up we'll order your startup supplies including reusable collection bins, clear liners, and special color tube crimping tools. We'll also come onsite to train your staff on how to prepare materials for collection (it's easy). Once that's done, all you have to do is collect your used foils and color tubes instead of throwing them away.
Local Green Salon will pick up your metal waste on a recurring schedule. This is normally 1-3 times per month depending on your subscription level and how much metal your salon collects. After aggregating material from multiple salons we deliver it to local scrapyards for recycling.
Enjoy increased client loyalty and retention from your sustainability efforts. Cover the costs of the program by charging a small "Eco Fee" of $1-$2 per ticket. You'll end up with net income you can apply to other green initiatives, and a positive ROI.

Local Green Salon (LGS) is a company that sets up salons with the materials and training needed to collect metal waste. LGS then picks up the waste periodically and delivers it to a local scrapyard where it can be recycled. LGS charges salons a flat monthly subscription fee for the service. Salons recoup the subscription amount, and potentially more, by charging their customers a small "Eco Fee." Any excess can be applied to the salon's other green initiatives.
The main player in the salon recycling space is Green Circle Salons. Their program requires shipping waste materials across the country. Our program emphasizes the fact that materials are collected by local drivers and delivered to local scrapyards or recycling facilities.
Local Green Salon only recycles salon metal waste, specifically used color foils and color tubes. In most salons that do color services, these materials represent the bulk of the waste. They are also the most efficiently recyclable of all salon waste.
The LGS program is very simple. After you sign up, we will ship you the materials you need to start collecting foils and color tubes. These items must be segregated in separate containers. We provide your containers, liners, special crimping tools, and training. We also send you your customized LGS badge for display on your website, to let your customers know you're a certified member of our metal recycling program. After that, all you have to do is break the habit of throwing those items in the trash and instead collect them. Initially while we're learning how much material you generate, you can send us an email to let us know you need a collection. After a while we will know enough about your patterns of usage to put your collection on a regular schedule.
The first step is to contact us to setup a call so we can learn more about your salon.
No, you can cancel any time. The collection bins and crimpers are yours to keep. You will need to remove any LGS badge(s) from your website, as they will no longer verify.
We generally pick up 1-2 times per month per salon. Depending on your salon's observed volume over time, we may pick up more frequently. It is required that you have some space to store bags of material between the time you empty your bin and the time we pick up.
Initially, you don't have to supply anything. Your setup fee covers your reusable plastic bins, initial set of clear plastic liners, and color tube crimpers. The only items you'll need to supply ongoing are the clear plastic recycling bags after your initial supply runs out.
The standard setup fee for a standard 2-bin setup with 2 tube crimpers and training is $300. If you need additional bins or crimpers, they will be provided at cost.
Most salons choose to pass on the costs of running the metal recycling program to their customers via a nominal "Eco Fee" of $1-$2. Most booking systems will allow you to add this type of fee either to all tickets, or just tickets that generate metal waste (color services). Because LGS subscription costs are relatively low, most salons will end up with more revenue in Eco Fees than their LGS subscription. That extra income can be used for your salon's other green initiatives.
In our experience most clients are happy to pay a small fee to know that their metal waste is being recycled instead of ending up in landfill, especially when they're educated about the sheer quantity of metal waste generated by the average salon. As an LGS member you will have access to customer-facing education materials that explain how the program works and how it benefits the environment.
We accept all major credit cards, or ACH (e-check).
Sorry, there are no refunds on setup fees (since we incur expenses for supplies on your behalf) or monthly subscription charges. However, you are free to cancel your subscription at any time.
